چکیده

Applying basic physical principles to recent observational results, we derive upper and lower limits on microwave anisotropy from point sources over the range of frequencies 10-1000 GHz. We examine the level of noise in the observations as a possible indication of source confusion at subarcminute scales. We also derive an upper limit on microwave anisotropy caused by the sources responsible for the Far-Infrared Background radiation detected in FIRAS data. Our upper limit on point source confusion of ∆T/T = 10 for a 10 beam at 100 GHz would cause severe foreground contamination for CMB anisotropy observations, although the actual contamination level is probably much lower. This upper limit constrains the long-feared possibility of an undetected population of sources with emission peaking near 100 GHz. Source detections closer to 100 GHz are needed to improve our knowledge of galaxy evolution at high redshift and to predict the level of point source confusion. The current status of observational cosmology

Observational cosmology has indeed made very rapid progress in recent years. The ability to quantify the universe has largely improved due to observational constraints coming from structure formation. The transition to precision cosmology has been spearheaded by measurements of the anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) over the past decade. More recently, observations of the large...

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT We estimate the level of confusion of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropy measurements caused by extragalactic infrared sources. CMB anisotropy observations at high resolution and high frequencies are especially sensitive to this foreground. We have combined IRAS data on bright infrared galaxies with information about the Galaxy from the DIRBE and FIR...

Running-mass inflation model and WMAP

1550-7998=20 We consider the observational constraints on the running-mass inflationary model, and, in particular, on the scale dependence of the spectral index, from the new cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy measurements performed by WMAP and from new clustering data from the SLOAN survey. We find that the data strongly constraints a significant positive scale dependence of n, and w...

Production of Topological Defects at the End of Inflation

Hybrid inflation within supersymmetric grand unified theories, as well as inflation through brane collisions within braneworld cosmological models, lead to the formation of onedimensional defects. Observational data, mainly from the cosmic microwave background temperature anisotropies but also from the gravitational wave background, impose constraints on the free parameters of the models. I rev...

Observational Constraints on Inflation Models with Nonminimal Scalar Field

The power spectra of the scalarand tensor-type structures generated in an inflation model based on nonminimally coupled scalar field are derived. The contributions of these structures to the anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background radiation are derived, and are compared with the four year COBE DMR data. The constraints on the ratio of the self-coupling and nonmimimal coupling constants, t...
